The Venice Marathon is a marathon that takes place every year in October, usually the fourth Sunday of the month, starting in Stra and finishing in Venice (42 km). The Venice Marathon has been the first italian marathon recognized by the Association of International Marathon and distance Races (AIMS) and it makes part of the international calendar of IAAF.
The Venice Marathon starts in Stra, a small town near Padua, and has its finish line in Riva Sette Martiri, one bridge far from the Hotel Bucintoro.
The start is in Stra, small place near Padua, famous for Villa Pisani. The Marathon goes through Fiesso D’artico, Dolo and Mira, along the Brenta, famous for the palladian villas and arrives in Mestre, going through the town and San Giuliano Park. After that, the participants take the Liberty bridge that connects Venice with the mainland. After crossing some bridges, the atleths arrive in Saint Mark’s square crossing one bridge installed for this occasion, that goes from Punta della Salute to San Marco. The finish line is placed in Riva Sette Martiri, one bridge far from Hotel Bucintoro.

The first Marathon took place the 18th May 1986. In the Venice Marathon of 2011, for the first time ever, the Marathon passed through Saint Mark’s square. Venice marathon is very active with charity through www.retedeldono.it and since a lot of years the campaign “Run of water”, “Run for life” that has the purpose to build wells in Uganda. This association is run by Alex Zanardi.
